Fruit Flies Drosophila spp
GENERAL IDENTIFICATION
These very small flies have a great affinity for ripe fruits and certain vegetables on which they will lay their eggs and develop. They appear to come from nowhere within a short time, and can rapidly build into enormous populations. Spillage of fermented products such as beer or wine are also extremely attractive to this insect, and taverns and bars are frequently infested because of this.
The adult insects are approximately 3-4 mm long and are dull brown in colour with distinctive red eyes. The females lay their eggs on fermenting product and these eggs hatch in about 36 hours, the larvae feed on this for about 5-6 days before moving to drier areas to pupate. the adults that emerge from the pupal sac will start mating again within 2 days, so that in ideal temperatures, the life cycle can be completed in 8-10 days. Because of their extremely short life cycle, these insects need only a lapse in sanitation to find a suitable breeding ground, and this is especially noticeable in 24hour food and beverage vending operations.
