Grape Berry Moth

GENERAL IDENTIFICATION

The Grape Berry Moth is a common pest of grapes in Ontario and many of the Eastern US States. Approximately 4 mm long, the adult moth is usually only seen when caught in traps, often with its wings in a folded position. Dark brown in color, it has a visibly lighter band across the lower half of the wings.

The first generation larvae emerge before the grape berries are formed and produce a distinctive white webbing in the flower clusters where they feed. The following larval generations leave a tell-tale hole into the grapes into which they burrow. These damaged grapes subsequently discolor, often as a result of secondary infection. In Ontario there are 3 generations per season, with the insect over-wintering as a pupa. The first emergence of the adult moth occurs around the 6th May and is usually detected in the adjoining hedgerow traps, before appearing in the vineyard traps. The first of the 3 larval periods occurs in early June and each lasts 2-3 weeks, depending on weather conditions.
